Unless you’re heavily into DIY plumbing projects, you may be unfamiliar with some common plumbing tools and not even know what they do.
Here is a list of common plumbing tools and their uses. So the next time you face a home plumbing challenge, you’ll know which tools you need.
Wrenches
Geeksonhome.com says an assortment of wrenches are part of any plumber’s toolkit.
“Pipe wrenches are a staple item — the pipe wrench is a heavy-duty tool that features an adjustable opening with serrated teeth.
“The teeth on the inside of this wrench’s opening can grip a pipe or pipe fitting as the plumber turns the wrench. The teeth dig in and add torque to every turn.”
Crescent and Allen wrenches are also usually found in the plumber’s toolkit.
Hacksaw
It’s not always easy to disassemble plumbing. “With a hacksaw you can remove the blade, wrap one in with a cloth, and slip it in for hard to reach places,” Plumbing.about.com says.
Because hacksaws come in different sizes, plumbers sometimes carry both smaller and larger ones. That gives them the flexibility needed to handle any size job.
Drill & Hole-Boring Bits
“An electric drill or electric hammer drill equipped with auger, hole-saw or masonry bits can create holes through all manner of materials, leaving holes through which plumbers place pipes,” according to Geeksonhome.com,
Drain & Pipe Cleaning Tools
These are used to clean out blocked drains. HansonData.com divides them into three categories:
“Chemical drain cleaners, electric cleaners and enzymatic drain cleaners, which are used when taking precautionary measures against future blockage.”
Additional tools
“Most plumbers will never be found without a plunger or snake, which remove clogs using either suction or by physically unseating the clog,” Ehow.com says.
“A jab saw cuts off water closet bolts and reaches tight spaces. A basin wrench extends behind fixtures to tighten or loosen water supply connections to the appliance or fixture.”
