Common causes of clogs: Part 1

July 21, 2015 by Eyman Plumbing Staff

There are several reasons why your main line, connected to all your drains, gets clogged and backs up.  Here are some of the most common causes of clogs…

Outside The Home

General build up in the pipe itself

Stuff collects and hardens inside the main line as the years pass. As it does, more debris is trapped until nothing flows through the pipe.

When Eyman cleans the main line, they scrape off the hardened old stuff that built up and allow the waste and water to again flow through the pipe.

The pipe has been compromised

A joint in the main line may weaken or the pipe has thinned to where can roots grow through the line. Debris catches on these roots and eventually blocks the flow.

In some cases, Eyman can clear the pipe enough to give the customer temporary relief. But those roots always grow back.

Eventually, the pipe must be repaired or replaced. Eyman has customers who have their main lines cleared annually to keep roots at bay. This extends the life of their pipes by three to four years.

Inside The Home

Clogs in the smaller waste lines

Eyman may find build up from soap, hair and other objects that get through and eventually block the pipe.

Eyman clears the debris and either pushes it out to the main or uses a cable to bring it back so it can be removed.

Plugged toilets

The cause can be the medications people flush away. Because such waste is not easily broken down, it gets caught in the toilet or in the waste line just beyond.

Eyman makes sure the toilet has the appropriate flushing power. If it does, they recommend the home owner flush more water and use a less-dense toilet paper.

An object sometimes is flushed

And appears to have gone all the way. But it actually gets caught somewhere and in time catches debris as well.

Depending on where the object gets caught, Eyman can usually pull it out of the line and clear any debris it trapped.

Here’s a tip: Run lots of water through your waste lines to keep them flowing and reduce debris build-up.
