Common HVAC Questions Part 2

July 14, 2015 by Eyman Plumbing Staff

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning, usually called HVAC, are what stand between you and your comfort. If it’s sweltering and you can’t get relief or you freeze in the winter despite turning up your heater, you may have a problem.

Below are three more common HVAC questions we get at Eyman Plumbing:

Why is my thermostat blank?

Okay, if we assume you have power in your home, check the unit to see if it needs new batteries. If not, check your furnace’s safety switch. It looks like a light switch. Check if it’s “on.” If it is, you may need to call us to come out and check your thermostat.

Why is there so much static in my home?

You know there is a lot of static if you shock your spouse, child or pet every time you walk across the floor. Though some static electricity is normal, especially in winter, too much is a problem.

One easy way to combat this is to install a humidifier. That puts more moisture in your air, helping you breathe easier. And it reduces the static.

If you already have a humidifier and you still experience a ton of static plus nosebleeds, shocks or dryer skin, you may have an issue with your system. That’s when you call Eyman Plumbing to take a look.

Why is there a buzzing noise from my air conditioning unit?

There are a few reasons this could happen:

  • There is a loose or damaged part like a bearing inside your air conditioning unit. If you leave it to rattle around in there, it can damage other parts of the system.
  • The motor in the unit is defective, which eventually stops your fans. Or it could be a bad compressor, which means your home would stop cooling.
  • A different electrical problem. It could be a loose capacitor (a device to store an electric charge) or a contactor (an electrically controlled switch used to switch an electrical power circuit) that’s come loose.

Any of these issues sound familiar? Sometimes there’s an easy fix to an HVAC problem and sometimes the right call is the one you make to Eyman Plumbing at 402-731-2727. We are here to help.
