We all know what usually gets flushed down the toilet. But there are people who think they can throw anything in the bowl and flush it away.
And while your toilet has a lot of suction, there are many items you simply shouldn’t try to flush.
Why? Because there’s always the chance they’ll get stuck and make the bowl water overflow onto your bathroom floor.
Even if that doesn’t happen, they might simply sit at the bottom of the bowl waiting for you to reach in and retrieve them.
Here’s a short list of five things you shouldn’t toss into your toilet
1. Your dental floss
You keep your teeth clean and healthy by flossing. But used dental floss isn’t biodegradable. One piece may not seem like much, but when several pieces stick together in a giant glob, you can see how it creates problems. Throw it in the trash instead.
The main reason this is a horrible idea is the impact it has on our drinking water. The water from your toilet ultimately leads to lakes and rivers. And your old meds might contaminate the water supply.
3. Food grease
This sounds like a no-brainer, but it wouldn’t be listed if no one did it. Although cooked grease is warm and pliable, once flushed, it cools and congeals into a big grease blob that easily blocks pipes.
4. Paper towels
Paper towels are super absorbent. That means they easily pick up excess water. And there’s a lot of water in your toilet bowl. The more water the paper towels absorb, the bigger they become. That can easily cause your toilet to roll over and play dead.
5. Cigarette butts
Yes, most folks know a toilet isn’t the best place to toss a cigarette, but it still happens. Cigarettes never break down and are best stuck in the garbage.
