Offices, schools, stores, restaurants and other commercial and industrial buildings hum with a constant flow of people and activities, all leaving unavoidable traces in the air. It’s a huge challenge to keep breathing air fresh and pure in these high traffic environments.
Types of Indoor Air Pollution
Humans constantly shed thousands of skin cells per minute, even more when they are active. These mingle with other common airborne irritants, which are around us all the time.
Indoor pollution consists of things like dust, pollen, exhaust fumes, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds, smoking, cooking oils, viruses, and bacteria. As greater numbers of people use a space, the indoor pollution grows exponentially.
Some airborne particles are large enough to be seen in the right angle of sunlight, while others are so tiny they can only be seen under a microscope.
These particles are often measured by their size or aerodynamic diameter in measurements of micrometers or microns.
Coarse Particles
Coarse particles are the largest, between 10 and 2.5 microns. These are things like dust, pollen, spores, and insect parts that are often caught by hairs in our lungs and noses.
Fine Particles
Fine particles are the next smallest, between 2.5 and 0.1 microns. These can travel dangerously deep into the respiratory system. Fumes from tobacco smoke, cooking, burning candles, or fireplaces are fine particles.
Smaller respiratory droplets from human breathing and particles accelerated by coughing, sneezing, singing, screaming, and laughing are also fine particles. Bacteria, fungal spores, and viruses can be in the lower range of this category.
Ultra Fine Particles
Ultra fine particles, smaller than 0.1 microns, can cause even worse health issues. They can settle in your lungs longer and are small enough to be transported to all your major organs. This category includes the tiniest particles from cooking and burning as well as respiratory droplets and some virus spores.
