There’s nothing like a long, hot shower at the end of a busy day, but common shower problems might put a damper on your dampening. Here, we address several common issues and how to fix them.
Poor Water Pressure
Build-up on your shower head can cause weak water pressure, leaving you feeling unclean. Limescale can easily be removed with a descaling product or with a quick soak in white vinegar if you would like to avoid chemical solvents.
Simply unscrew your shower head and soak in the solution of your choosing. After 10 to 15 minutes, give a quick scrubbing with an old toothbrush or soft bristled cleaning brush. Check the shower attachment and remove any additional sediment or buildup before replacing your clean sprayer plate.
Clogged Drain
Anything from soap scum and hard water buildup to stray hair in the drain can turn your refreshing shower into a grimy bath. Depending on the severity of the clog, you may be able to handle this one yourself.
First, flush your drain with hot water. Add ½ of a cup of baking soda to the empty drain and allow it to settle for a few minutes. Next, add a mixture of 1 cup of very hot water and 1 cup of white vinegar to the drain. Cover with your drain plug if you have one, and allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Flush one more time with hot water and see if that sluggish drain is back in shape.
If you’re still having problems, it’s time to escalate to plunger power. Really tough clogs that can’t be dissolved require some suction to dislodge.
If you still can’t get a proper flow, then it’s a good idea to call in your Eyman team for a thorough drain cleaning. A clog left too long can cause a strong, unpleasant odor, and can even damage pipes over time.
Temperature Inconsistency and Rattling Pipes
These may seem like unrelated issues, but as hot and cold water fight for space in your pipes, you may notice a loud rattling in your pipes.
Additionally, many people opt to turn up their water temperatures as the weather cools.
If you’re experiencing either of these issues, adjusting your mixing valve might be the simple solution for you, however, caution must be used. Every year, thousands of people are forced to seek treatment due to scalding or thermal shock after over-correcting a mixing valve or water heater, so start with small adjustments.
From leaky faucets to cracked pipes, Eyman’s team of professionals have seen and fixed it all.
