The Top Signs You Need a New HVAC System

May 1, 2020 by Eyman Plumbing Staff

Do you need a new HVAC system? How can you tell? Read on to learn the top signs you need a new HVAC system.

To save money and improve the quality of the air in your home keep your HVAC system well maintained

Your HVAC system is one of the biggest appliances in your home, and it’s one most people can’t live without.

But if yours has been around for a while, it might be doing you more harm than good.
It can cost a lot of money to keep an old or broken HVAC system up and running. Installing a new HVAC unit isn’t just a necessity at times, it can also make your life a lot easier.
We’ve put together these eight warning signs you need to get a new HVAC system as soon as possible.

1. Your System Starts More and Stays on Longer

As your HVAC system gets older, it has to work harder to keep your house at the right temperature. Because of this, it might start more often and run for longer periods of time.
This means your HVAC system can’t produce and circulate the air in your home efficiently.
If you notice it’s taking your HVAC system longer to cool down or heat up your home, it might be time to install something new.

2. It Makes Loud Noises

Your HVAC system is going to make noise when it’s running. This is normal. But there are a few sounds that mean something isn’t working the way it should.
Here’s a list of unusual sounds you should listen for:

  • Loud humming
  • Screeching or squealing
  • Groaning
  • Rattling
  • Banging

Some of these noises are caused by loose parts inside your unit. Others are signs there’s something seriously wrong with your system. As soon as you hear loud or aggressive noises coming from your HVAC system, it’s time to call an HVAC professional and install a new unit.

3. You Constantly Have to Make Repairs

You should expect to make a few repairs after installing your HVAC system, but your unit shouldn’t need more than a few. If you’re constantly calling a professional HVAC technician to come and fix your unit, something’s not working right.
Making repair after repair can get expensive fast. In fact, you can often save money by installing a new unit altogether.
A new unit will also ensure your HVAC system won’t break down during the hottest or coldest times of the year.

4. Your Energy Bill Is Higher Than Normal

Remember, when your HVAC system is older or doesn’t work properly, it has to run more often and for longer periods of time than normal. An old HVAC system also requires more energy to condition the air inside your home.
Because of this, an old or faulty HVAC unit can make your energy bill go way up.
If you notice your energy bill is higher than normal and can’t figure out why, it might be your HVAC system’s fault. Installing a new unit will save you a lot of money on your energy bill every year.

5. It’s Over 10 Years Old

You can make your HVAC system last longer then 10 years if you maintain it and keep it in good condition. But once it gets older than that, your HVAC system will become less efficient. This means it will racket up your energy bill and require more frequent repairs.
A 10 year-old HVAC system is also often outdated and can cost more to repair as parts get harder to find.
If your HVAC system is reaching the 10-year mark, it’s time to start searching for a new one.

6. It’s Not the Right Size

You might be tempted to install a small HVAC unit because of its cheaper upfront cost. But a unit that’s too small for your home won’t be able to heat or cool the air to your desired temperature.
That means you’ll have to leave it on longer, and it’ll have to work harder than it normally would which makes a smaller system more expensive in the long run.
The same is true of a unit that’s too big. You’ll be spending more money than you need to condition the air inside your home.
You should consider installing a new HVAC system if the one you have isn’t the right size for your house.

7. You Have Poor Indoor Air Quality

An old HVAC system won’t be able to filter dust, allergens, and other debris from your air. This means it will spread those things throughout your entire home.  This can lead to health concerns, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Eye, nose, throat, and skin irritation
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Allergies
  • Asthma

If you experience any of these symptoms, you’re past the time for repairs. Call a professional HVAC technician as soon as possible.

8. You’re Getting Ready to Sell Your Home

If you’re getting ready to sell your home, installing a new HVAC system is a good way to attract interested buyers.
Some buyers will walk away from your home or deduct a huge amount from your asking price if your HVAC system is old or needs repairs.

Warnings Signs You Need a New HVAC System

If you notice any of these warning signs, it’s time to install a new HVAC system in your home. And if you ever think your HVAC unit has become unsafe, turn it off right away. Listen to your instincts and call for emergency HVAC repair.
