December 6, 2021 by Eyman Plumbing Staff

Not sure if you need water heater repair? Here are 5 signs you might need to call a professional to repair your water heater.

woman in shower worried about water heaterHave you noticed that the water in your sink lacks much heat? Are you tired of holding your breath whenever you go to take a cold shower? If so, then you may need to get your water heater repaired.

If you have a malfunctioning water heater, then it’s time to get that thing fixed! Without it, you won’t have a consistent supply of hot water. Recognizing the signs of an aging water heater can help you know when it’s time to schedule a repair.

Read on for an in-depth guide on the telltale signs that you need your water heater repaired right away.

Signs You Need Water Heater Repair

1. Inconsistent Temperatures

There’s perhaps nothing more frustrating than dealing with irregular temperatures in your water supply. It can provide more of a setback to your daily routine than most people might initially think.

Think about it… how much do you look forward to a warm shower to help you relax and unwind from a stressful day? Can you be certain that you’re killing off the germs from your dishes if you aren’t able to wash them off with hot water?

This might take a few different forms. First, you might notice that the water heater works in some areas of the house, such as the kitchen, but not in other areas, such as your bathroom.

You might also notice that the temperature comes and goes. Sometimes you have warm/hot water, and other times, it’s cold water only. Then there are the scenarios in which you have absolutely zero hot water at all.

If you’ve noticed that your water has inconsistent temperatures, then it’s time to schedule an appointment with a professional water heater repair service.

The professionals will inspect the water heater and troubleshoot the issue. The infrequent warm water could be due to an aging water heater or a build-up of minerals that are blocking it.

2. Water Leaks

The water heater is one of the most overlooked features of any property. Whether it’s for a commercial or residential property, there aren’t many owners that will take the time to inspect it.

Frequent water heater inspection is important for several reasons, primarily to ensure there are no water leaks. Given that the water heater is generally surrounded by other essential equipment, water leaks can cause massive damage to your home.

First, the stagnant water could cause excessive mold growth. This can make your family ill and can damage the air quality inside your home.

Second, the water could begin corroding other pieces of equipment such as pipes, rods, or even the water heater itself.

That corrosion might be happening on the inside of the water heater as well. If you’ve noticed that your water supply is slightly discolored, it could be a sign of rust. If that happens, turn off the water supply right away and contact a professional water heater repair service.

Lastly, that water leak around your water heater could be incredibly dangerous to your family members, as it might cause electrocution due to the other electrical equipment near it. Don’t try to DIY the issue, contact a professional who knows how to handle it safely.

3. Your Water Heater Makes Weird Noises

The modern homeowner is no stranger to funny sounds. Between all of the different systems (HVAC systems, plumbing systems, kitchen appliances, etc.), it isn’t uncommon for you to hear unusual sounds from time to time.

But here’s the question: are those noises consistent? And where are they coming from?

It’s important to take a moment and find out where that sound originates. What appliance is causing the weird sound? If it’s coming from the water heater, then you’ll need to get the problem resolved quickly.

Generally speaking, the noise would indicate that your water heater is old and needs to be replaced. The strange sound could also be caused by a build-up of mineral deposits that are preventing the water heater from pushing water supply throughout your home.

4. Discolored Water

Far too many of us take our water supply for granted. We simply fill up our cups or open our mouths under the sink without even looking at the quality of the water.

If you notice that the water has any sort of discoloration, shut it off and contact a professional right away. The discoloration could be a sign that there’s corrosion in your water, as well as other hazardous chemicals that need to be drained.

There are situations in which it could just be the high water pressure making the water have a “hazy” appearance, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

5. The Hot Water Vanishes Quickly

Most homeowners are quick to dismiss it when hot water runs out quickly. They just assume it’s due to their spouse taking a long, 20-minute shower.

That isn’t always the case. Sometimes, the sudden loss of hot water is your water heater’s way of alerting you to a larger issue. There could be a build-up or clog that’s preventing the hot water from getting to you.

A professional water heater repair service will identify the problem and solve it within an hour or two. The issue will be fixed in no time, and you’ll be back to your comfortable lifestyle!
