Periodically changing your filters is very important, but how do you do it? Learn more on how to change HVAC filter with this article!

You might enjoy the cool air your HVAC unit bring into your home, especially during those hot summer months.

However, when was the last time you changed your HVAC filter?

If you can’t remember or you don’t know how to change HVAC filter, you came to the right place.

Read on to learn how to change the filter in a few easy steps.

How Often to Change HVAC Filter?

Before you learn how to change HVAC filter, you should consider how often you need to change it.

While some recommend you change every 30 days, others might say 4 to 6 weeks or every six months. These recommendations vary depending on the type of HVAC filter used in your unit.

Follow these rules when determining how often to change:

How much use do you get out of your HVAC? If you live in a place with harsher climates you might need to use the unit more often, either to cool or heat your home. If you only use it every so often, the filter might have a longer lifespan.

How big is your house? In larger homes, more air needs to be pumped into the filter to cool or heat the house.

How good is the air quality? If you have pets, then you know the fur will get trapped into the filter. If you’re worried about air quality, you should change the filter more often.

1. Turn Off the Power

Before you begin changing the air filter, you must turn the power of the unit off. This will not only protect yourself, but it will protect your equipment.

If you attempt to change the filter while the unit is still going, you could risk dirt and debris getting sucked and trapped in the unit. Also, you put yourself at risk if you touch the voltage.

2. Remove the Filter

This is the easy step. All you have to do is slide out the filter and you’re done.

However, you should use this opportunity to take inspect the filter. Observe how much dirt it’s holding. If you can barely see through the filter, it’s a sign you should replace it more often.

3. Clean the Filter

You might be using a disposable filter, but in some cases, people use a reusable one.

Reusable filters have a metal frame as opposed to cardboard frames.

If the filter is reusable, all you have to do is clean it according to manufacturer’s instructions. Some need a rinse with clean water and others just need to get vacuumed.

4. Insert a New or Cleaned Filter

If you used a disposable filter, all you have to do is slide the new one back in the slot.

For reusable ones, make sure you’ve cleaned thoroughly and then put back.

This is How to Change HVAC Filter

Replacing your HVAC filter can be done in only a few easy steps. There’s nothing to fear.
